The ski resort now stretches from Tyrol (Fieberbrunn) all the way into Salzburger Land (Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang). With state-of-the-art lifts, the seemingly endless Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn ski resort meets the highest standards – everyone from mini slope professionals to snowpark acrobats to toboggan tamers and slope experts will find their pleasure here. Best tips for Saalbach Hinterglemm

This season, with a new six-pack on Bernkogel, Saalbach-Hinterglemm effectively completes its mission to abolish the slow lift. Most people holidaying here will ride nothing but gondolas and fast chairlifts. But this is overshadowed by much bigger news: a new gondola (and a new piste) this season will create a link with Fieberbrunn, to the north, making Austria’s largest linked ski area. The valley has a lot going for it in other respects, too. Sadly, reliably good snow isn’t one of them. The snowmaking is good enough to make a midwinter visit here a fairly safe bet, but problems can arise as spring approaches. Saalbach and Hinterglemm are separate villages, their centres 4km apart, which have expanded along the floor of their dead-end east-west valley. They haven’t quite merged, but have adopted a single marketing identity. A ‘ski-circus’ links the two, with lifts and runs on both sides of the valley. At the eastern end is a long-standing link to Leogang, in the next valley, and now from a point directly above Hinterglemm there will be the new link with Fieberbrunn. Several resorts in Salzburgerland are reachable by road. There are two regional passes to consider – read the ‘Lift passes’ panel.

PROS:

  • Good intermediate area – expanded now to become Austria’s largest
  • Lift system now essentially 100% fast chairs and gondolas
  • Saalbach is a pleasant, lively village, largely car-free in the centre
  • Dozens of good mountain huts

CONS:

  • The snowmaking is crucial – most slopes are sunny as well as low, and the snow suffers
  • Limited steep terrain
  • Both villages spread widely
  • Boisterous evening behaviour doesn’t suit everyone
